about
Anna Kühlein is a passionate film music composer working in Leipzig and Berlin. Her work is characterized by her ability to deeply empathize with a wide variety of stories, which is also reflected in her CV: in the feature film sector in the genres of drama, social and socio-critical, arthouse, suspense & thriller, science fiction, historical as well as the diverse world of various documentaries. She works with a variety of musical genres and instruments, using classical and acoustic instruments as well as synthetic sounds such as synthesizers. She plays with breaking listening habits and likes to leave familiar genres behind, experimenting with unfamiliar combinations, field recordings and unusual sounds - all of which make up her musical DNA.
Anna Kühlein studied music production with a focus on composition, recording technology and piano before successfully completing her master's degree in film music at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in 2020.
Her most recent works include the score for Doris Dörrie's latest feature film “Freibad”, the TV film “Kanzlei Liebling Kreuzberg” by Franziska Margarete Hoenisch and the series “Was wir fürchten” by Daniel Rübesam. She also composed for the internationally successful multi-part films "Ku'damm 59" (directed by Sven Bohse, co-composed with Maurus Ronner), the third season of the youth series "Wir sind jetzt" (directed by Christian Klandt) and the thriller series "Decision Game" (directed by Benjamin Pfohl).
In the documentary film sector, Kühlein wrote the music for the highly acclaimed cinema documentary “Wem gehört mein Dorf?” (directed by Christoph Eder), which received a nomination for best documentary film at the Filmpreis 2022. She composed the score for the documentary “Anima - die Kleider meines Vaters” (Uli Decker), which was awarded in the categories “Best Documentary Film” and “Audience Award Documentary Film” at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival, among others, and has received several awards to date.
She also composed the score for the German-Swiss production “Amazonen einer Großstadt” (Thaïs Odermatt), which received the Swiss Film Award for Best Graduation Thesis in 2021.
Anna Kühlein has received several nominations in the “Best Film Music” category at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival (2021 and 2022 with two film scores) and was awarded the German Film Music Prize for Best Newcomer (“Best Young Talent”) while still studying film music in 2019.
